A writer must know exactly how to market his work for films, television shows or publishing. On their part, publishers will always try to get the best deal out of you and maximize their gains. You must ensure that you get the best value for money for your work, and safeguard your interests.
When a company commits to buying your story, script, or concept for films or television, they will propose an option agreement that gives them the exclusive right to sell your work.
When selling your work, ensure you get a
NON DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT
signed by the person who sees your work. This will help you in cataloguing and keeping track of all those who’ve seen your work. It will also help you through the legal aspects involved with the business.
Option money:
You must remember that there’s always a chance of your work being held up with producers. If you’ve given them exclusive rights, it means you can’t market your work to other producers, and as such should safeguard your personal interests by insisting on a token, advance payment.
Earning Options
Purchase Price (or Set up Fee):
This is a consolidated payment made to you for your work at the stage when the production company sells your work to a network. The amount varies greatly depending upon your negotiations with the buyer. At this point the show no longer belongs to you, and is the property of the Production Company who sold the show, and eventually of the network or distributor who puts it into production.
Credit:
It’s important for you to get proper credit for your work. This varies from medium to medium, for instance, movie scripts, tv shows and books. Credits usually mention
‘Story by’
;
‘Screenplay by’; ‘Production by’
;
‘Written by’
;
‘Story by’
;
‘Feature by’
etc.
